Vatican II was the largest council in the history of the Catholic Church. Thousands of people participated in its planning, execution, and implementation. Millions have felt its impact, including the one billion Catholics alive today. One man, however, is best associated with the full meaning and measure of the council. Under another pontiff, the Church could have held an ecumenical council in the twentieth century. Without Pope John XXIII, it would not have been Vatican II.
